The Evolution of Web Technologies

Web 1.0

Web 1.0
: that Geo cities & Hot mail era was all about read-only content and static HTML websites. People chose navigating the web over link directories of Yahoo!

The web as an information portal
  • Information exclusivity, be the first to own the content
  • Dividing the world wide web into usable directories
  • Everyone has their personal own little corner comer in the cyberspace
  • Lack
  1. Context
  2. Interaction
  3. Scalability

Web 2.0

Web 2.0 :
This is about user-generated content and the read-write web. People are consuming as well as contributing information through blogs or sites like Flicks, You Tube, etc. The line dividing a consumer and content publisher is increasingly getting blurred in the Web 2.0 era.

The web as a platform
  • Focus on the power of the community to create and validate
  • the power of a seemingly freer form of organization ("tags")
  • Setting up "hooks" for future integration (RS S, A PI)
  • Lacks:
  1. Personalization
  2. True portability
  3. Interoperability

Web 3.0

Web 3.0 : this will be about semantic web (or the meaning of data), personalization (e.g. Google), intelligent search and behavior and advertising among other things.

The Semantic Web

The Semantic Web is "a web of data". HTML describes documents, while RD F describes things. Why talk about a "page" in terms of style and links, when you know a book has chapters and a CD has tracks?
  • Challenges
  1. Human error and system abuse
  2. Selfishness, why take the time to teach the machine how to teach me?
  • Opportunities
  1. Those young people love their RS S feeds
  2. Data portability and sharing standards are so 2008
  3. If we were all so selfish, Web 2.0 would have never worked (e.g. Wikipedia)
  • Bottom-line
It is not just for academics anymore. People will use the tools they find most useful. Where the people are, advertisers must follow.

Web 3.0 Meme Map

The semantic web:
Changing the web into a language that can be read and categorized by system rather than humans. (Like RD F(resource description framework), GRDDL, and W3C)

Artificial intelligence:
extract meaning from the way people interact with the web.(Like Google.com)

Personalization: contextualizing the web based on the persons using it.

Mobility: everything, everywhere, all the time. (Like wiki, mobile phone)

web 4.0

Web 4.0: in the simple words, a machine can also be clever on reading the contents and animations, and answer in the form of executing and deciding what to execute first to load the website fast with superior quality and performance and build more commanding interfaces.
