WEB GENERATIONS in Relation to E-Commerce and E-Business

In this posting, I would like to share about the evolution of web technologies with its impact to E-commerce and E-business.

Basically, there are three main categories of web generations that have implemented by many organizations, such as web 1.0, web 2.0, and web 3.0. Here are the brief explanation of the difference between those generations with a critical evaluation regarding the impact to E-commerce and E-business environment:

• Web 1.0 This is the first generation of web technology that has very limited function. In this technology, there the Web provides only information for the reader. There is no active communication or information flow between the reader and the website. This web generation is considered as "read-only" Web.
  

• Web 2.0 In this generation, users can conduct an interaction with the Web. They can write and contribute the content to the Web. This generation is considered as "read-write" Web. Blog and social media are the examples of the implementation of Web 2.0 generation.

• Web 3.0 This generation is more advanced than Web 2.0. It is something like "read-write-execute" web. Web 3.0 is about replacing existing software platforms with a new generation of platforms as a service. Web service is the real implementation of this generation. Now, there are many websites built on this technology. Flickr is an example of website which is currently implementing it. It provides a web service whereby developers can programmatically interface with Flickr to search for images.

Critical Evaluation:

According to the above explanation, it is clear that those generations have been impacted to E-commerce and E-business environment. This is because of its business models depend on the Web technology. By having the more advanced of Web technology, it obviously affects to the evolution of E-commerce and E-business as well. As an example, previously the Web provided only information of the products or services to the customers. Now, they even can conduct a purchasing online, e-auction, and so on so forth.
